R. KELLY REQUEST TO BE MOVED TO GENERAL POPULATION GRANTED
R. Kelly has received his wish and is moved to the general population of his the federal jail in downtown Chicago, where he will spend his time waiting on trial for his sexual abuse case.
Prosecutors fought against R. Kelly who stated he was involuntarily being held in solitary confinement. The Chicago Tribune reveals there is a recording conversation with Kelly that is resisting the move to general population back in July.
“If I go to population … I’m just up on everybody and everybody’s up on me, and I’m trying to figure out how to trust that or whatever,” said on the call.
“You know, and that’s why, I was like, hmmm, too many people up on you and I done seen too many movies, you know, and it’s just, and then I’m so popular here, it’s like yeah man,” Kelly allegedly added.
Currently while being held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center, R. Kelly has had three different cellmates and also had access to the recreation facility and commissary, purchasing Snickers.
“We filed a motion with the court, and the jail took the appropriate action and moved him,” Greenberg said.
The singer’s attorney, Steven Greenberg, tells TMZ … Kelly was moved Tuesday and claims the singer was only kept in solitary by prison officials as a form of punishment — due to his celebrity and the prurient nature of his alleged crimes.
Greenberg tells us that although R. Kelly will be in gen pop — which is normally considered more dangerous, especially for high-profile inmates — he claims there are going to be security measures in place that should keep his client safe.
We’re told R. Kelly will now be allowed 10 non-attorney visits instead of the previously allowed one. He’ll also have a longer leash for phone calls and emails.
Perhaps most important — for R. Kelly it seems — is the fresh air he’ll be able to experience now with other prisoners during rec time. He’ll get to hit the yard if he wants.
Now, prosecutors confirmed R. Kelly was being moved to gen pop in a court filing of their own — but added he was only in solitary briefly and at his request.
In the docs, obtained by TMZ, state prosecutors say R. Kelly had previously asked to be placed in a secluded wing of the prison called the Special Housing Unit with no cellmates, at first. They say he eventually did get cellmates.
Prosecutors his request to go back to gen pop was only made recently — and add he’s not bee in true solitary for the last 3 weeks.
